The rattle we know by heart
Timing chain wear is the defining issue of a whole BMW era — and one of our most practised repairs. Caught early, it’s a planned job on your terms, not a rebuild.
The sounds that matter
Chain wear announces itself before it fails — usually from the rear of the engine, where BMW mounted the chain on the affected diesels. If any of these sound familiar, a listen from someone who hears these engines every week takes minutes.
We’d always rather you came in for a false alarm than sat on a real one.

We know exactly which BMWs to listen to
The famous case is the N47 — the 2.0d fitted from 2007 to around 2015 across the 1, 3 and 5 Series, X1 and X3, with its chain at the flywheel end where nothing can be inspected without major dismantling. But it isn’t the only one we check.
Petrol N20s built before 2015 had a documented chain-guide weakness, the N13 in early F20 petrols carries a rear chain of its own, and the older N45/N46 four-cylinders are known for tensioner rattle. Newer B-series engines are far more robust — and we still listen, because it costs nothing.
Caught early, done once
An experienced ear, then evidence — fault codes, camshaft/crankshaft correlation data and oil inspection to confirm what the noise really is.
A video of the noise and our findings, with a clear itemised quote. If it’s not the chain, we tell you that too.
Chain, guides, tensioner and sprockets together — access costs what it does, so nobody should do half the job.
Engine timed to BMW specification, fresh oil and filter, road-tested, and guaranteed for 12 months / 15,000 miles.
Can I keep driving with the rattle?+
Book an inspection promptly. A light rattle caught early usually means a chain kit replaced on your schedule. Ignored, a worn chain can jump or snap — and that can destroy the engine. If the noise is loud or suddenly worse, stop driving and call us.
Is it always an engine-out job?+
On the rear-chain engines, replacement means major dismantling — on many cars the engine or gearbox comes out. That’s exactly why early detection matters: the parts are modest and the job is done once, properly.
What exactly gets replaced?+
The chain, guides, tensioner and sprockets as a complete kit, using genuine or OE parts — plus fresh oil and filter. Replacing only the noisy part with everything else worn makes no sense at this labour level.
Will an oil change make the noise go away?+
Fresh oil protects a healthy chain and can quieten a marginal one — but it doesn’t un-stretch a worn chain. If there’s a rattle, it needs assessing; if the chain is fine, we’ll happily tell you it was something far cheaper.
Are the newer B48/B58 engines affected?+
Chain failure is not a documented pattern on the modern B-series petrols and diesels — they’re fundamentally more robust designs. We still check chain behaviour as part of servicing, because listening is free.
