Fitted and registered — the step most skip

A modern BMW manages its battery's whole life through software. Fit a new one without registering it and the car keeps charging it like the old one — we do the job completely.

THE WARNING SIGNS

How a tired battery announces itself

BMW's power management protects a weakening battery long before it fails — shutting down comfort systems, disabling start/stop and throwing oddly unrelated warnings. That's why battery trouble so often looks like electrical gremlins.

We test the battery's true state of health, the charging system and for parasitic drains — because a module that won't sleep will flatten a brand-new battery just as fast as the old one.

WORTH A CHECK IF
Slow, laboured cranking, especially on cold mornings
Auto start/stop no longer working or rarely kicking in
Random electrical gremlins — windows, wipers, warnings
'Increased battery discharge' message on the iDrive
Flat battery after the car sits for a few days
A battery past five years old and never replaced
Odd faults — even 'drivetrain malfunction' warnings

WHY REGISTRATION MATTERS

Your BMW charges its battery by its age

An Intelligent Battery Sensor on the terminal feeds a power-management system that tracks the battery's age and health, deliberately changing the charging strategy as it wears. Fit a new battery without registering it and the car carries on charging it as if it were old — typically overcharging it, shortening its life dramatically and inviting the very electrical gremlins you just paid to cure.

There's a second detail fast-fit outlets miss: start/stop BMWs are specified with AGM batteries, and an AGM must only ever be replaced with AGM. And on most rear-driven BMWs the battery isn't under the bonnet at all — it's in the boot, with a vent tube that needs connecting properly.

Registered with dealer-level diagnostics on every replacement
Coded when capacity or battery type changes
AGM fitted where BMW specifies it — never downgraded
EVs and plug-in hybrids covered too — they all carry a 12V battery
HOW IT WORKS

Tested, fitted, registered

01
Test properly

True state of health, alternator and charging output, and a parasitic drain check — not just a ten-second battery test.

02
Recommend honestly

If it just needs a proper recharge, that's what we'll say. If it's done, you'll see the test results that show why.

03
Fit the correct spec

The right capacity and type for your exact car — AGM where BMW specifies it — with vent tubes and hold-downs done properly.

04
Register & code

The new battery registered with BMW diagnostics so the charging strategy starts fresh — and the new specification coded in if capacity or type changed.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Asked all the time

Straight answers — and if yours isn't here, ask us directly.

Why can't any garage just swap the battery?+

Physically fitting it is the easy part. The car actively manages charging based on the recorded age, capacity and type — so the new battery must be registered, and coded if the spec changed, with proper BMW diagnostics. A swap-and-go fit leaves a new battery being charged like an old one, which shortens its life and can cause a string of electrical faults.

What is battery registration, and can you do it?+

It's the diagnostic procedure that tells the power-management system a new battery is fitted, resetting the stored age and history so charging starts fresh. Yes — we do it as standard with every battery we fit, using dealer-level equipment, and we code the new specification in when capacity or type differs.

Can I fit a bigger battery for reliability?+

Sometimes, within limits — it must fit, meet specification, and the new capacity must be coded so charging is correct. What you must never do is downgrade: a start/stop BMW specified with AGM needs AGM again, not a cheaper conventional battery. We'll advise on what your car supports.

My BMW sits unused for weeks — what should I do?+

A modern BMW is never fully off, and two to three weeks standing can be enough to trigger warnings. The best answer is a smart maintenance charger left connected while it's parked — safe indefinitely and kind to AGM batteries. If it keeps going flat despite regular use, have it tested; there may be a drain worth finding.

My i4 is electric — surely this doesn't apply?+

It does. Every electric and plug-in hybrid BMW carries a conventional 12V battery alongside the drive battery — it powers the computers and is what actually wakes the car. If it fails, the car is immobile however charged the main battery is. We test, replace and register them just the same.
